QM10 Wellington
The Wellington 1:250 000 geological map includes the Wellington Region in the southwestern North Island, and part of the Marlborough District in the northeastern South Island.Much of the area is mountainous. In the North Island, the Aorangi, Rimutaka and Tararua ranges flank lowlands of the Wairarapa and Horowhenua. In the South Island, the Wairau valley separates the mountains of the Marlborough Sounds from those of southern Marlborough. The Hikurangi margin lies to the southeaast of the map area, while the South Wanganui and southern end of the Taranaki basins are in the northwest.
Within Cook Strait, submarine canyons feed eastwards into the Hikurangi Trough
