This is our newest map for the Caribbean region, essentially replacing the now-defunct Rough Guide map for this country.

A Brief History of Trinidad and Tobago

• Trinidad: First ‘discovered’ by Columbus and named Holy Trinity, its inhabitants were quickly deported as slaves to work in Spanish colonies. In 1595, Sir Walter Raleigh—often regarded as little more than a pirate—sacked the only Spanish settlement. Britain captured the island in 1797 and later added Tobago to its administration in 1889.
• Tobago: This island boasts an incredible history, having changed colonial masters 30 times in a century as Britain, France, and Spain competed for dominance in the Caribbean.

Modern-Day Attractions

Today, both islands serve as tourist havens:

• Trinidad: Known for delightful caves to explore and hosting the largest Carnival street festival in the world.
• Tobago: Famous for scuba diving and its rich history.
