The Peters projection map (or Gall-Peters projection) is an equal-area, rectangular world map that represents landmasses in their correct, relative sizes. Unlike the Mercator projection, which distorts area near the poles, the Peters projection accurately depicts the proportional size of continents, often aiming to provide a more accurate, equitable representation of the world.

Key Aspects of the Peters Projection Map:

  • True Relative Size:
It preserves the relative surface area of all regions, correcting the exaggeration of landmasses in higher latitudes found on maps like Mercator.

  • Shape Distortion:
To maintain accurate area, it distorts shapes, stretching regions near the equator vertically and flattening them near the poles.

  • Origin:
Developed by James Gall in 1855 and later popularized by historian Arno Peters in the 1970s.

  • Purpose:
Promoted for educational and political purposes as a more accurate, non-Eurocentric view of the world.

  • Appearance:
Features parallel lines of latitude and longitude, with standard parallels at 45 degrees north and south.

The map is often used to show a less distorted, more balanced view of the Southern Hemisphere and developing nations.
