Greenland & North Pole | ITMB 2023

Greenland is indeed a fascinating place to visit. Granted, much of it consists of inaccessible icefields that, if they melted, would detrimentally raise ocean levels to catastrophic levels. However, the coastal regions are inhabited, making it possible to fly in or take an adventuresome cruise with Linblad to explore the giant island.

Key Features of Greenland:

• Three-quarters of Greenland lies above the Arctic Circle, with icebergs carved out of the many slowly-moving rivers of ice being commonplace in the North Atlantic.
• Due to sea ice, the notable attractions of the island are concentrated in the southern third.
• The original settlers are Inuit peoples, who migrated eastwards from what is now Canada’s northland, not the Norse.
• Although Greenland has been a Danish possession for centuries, it is separated from Canada’s Ellesmere Island by the relatively narrow Nares Strait.
• The famous Thule Air Force Base is considerably south of Alert, Nunavut.

The North Polar Region Map:

The second side of the sheet features a separate map of the entire North Polar Region, centered on the true North Pole itself. This map is unique and offers an extended view of the Arctic Circle, reaching as far south as the 55th parallel.

• This map was prepared by the Canada Map Office and is copyright by the Queen, as are all government maps produced in Canada.
• Being a circular projection, place names are consistently oriented downwards, not circular. For example, Russian place names would appear upside-down if the map is rotated.
• Trivia points of note include:
  • The difference between true north and the magnetic pole.
  • The largest urban area in the region (Murmansk).
  • The location of the most northerly known thermal hot spring (Alaska).
  • The urban area closest to the North Pole (Alert, Canada’s Ellesmere Island, at about the 83rd parallel).
