Historical Background

Alfred Wernam Canning, born in 1860 in Campbellfield, north of Melbourne, began his career as a cadet surveyor in New South Wales. By 1893, he had joined the Western Australian Department of Lands and Survey.

  • 1901: Canning undertook the immense task of surveying a route for the Rabbit Proof Fence. This survey spanned approximately 1800 kilometres from the southern coast to a point south of Broome, taking four years to complete. At the time, it was one of the world's longest continuous surveys.
  • 1906: He was assigned to survey a stock route from Wiluna to Halls Creek, covering 1500 kilometres of trackless desert. Canning dedicated almost four years to surveying and constructing the stock route.
  • In his later years, at the age of 70, Canning supervised the reconditioning of wells, a task partially completed by William Snell. He passed away in Perth at the age of 76 in 1936.
