It gives a background to the mineral discoveries over the centuries, how and where minerals are deposited, exploration methods and evaluation methods and terms, mining methods and constraints, and a case history from exploration to mining is given for the Golden Cross gold mine. The environmental impact of exploration and mining on communities is discussed, plus New Zealand's mineral production, exports and imports, and mineral requirements for the future. Part 2 describes the location, geological occurrence, use and production of individual mineral commodities such as gold, greenstone and coal. A brief introduction to New Zealand minerals is followed by short descriptions of the occurrence, location, use and production of the more important metallic and non-metallic resources. New Zealand's coal, geothermal and petroleum energy resources, and groundwater resources are discussed. This book focuses on exploration of our mineral wealth rather than mine operations, processing techniques or finances.
